これからの機器は、高機能化とともに低消費電力化技術というものが大事になってくると思う。この分野で世界的に先を行くのが、Wavesat社 だ。Mobile WiMAX 用チップで、消費電力はわずか 150 mW である。Intel、AD ( Analog Devices )などが 最初に開発した WiMAX 向け SoC の消費電力は 2 W〜3 W だったことを考えるとどれだけ低電力化が実現したかがわかる。私は、これがどれだけすごいことなのかわからないのが、情けない。

米国調査会社 インスタット社 によると、現在、モバイル WiMAX を推進している世界的な ベースバンド ベンダには、Altair Semiconductor 、Amicus 、ApaceWave 、Redpine Signals などがある。Altair Semiconductor 以外はシリコンバレーに拠点を設けている。この分野では、イスラエルの OFDMA 技術の Runcom 社なども有名。

Summary
The coexistence of WiMAX, Bluetooth and WiFi in handsets and handheld devices poses an engineering challenge as their transmission over adjacent radio frequency bands may conflict and severely degrade performance. The proposed coexistence scheme eliminates this challenge by synchronizing the WiMAX and Bluetooth clocks, time-sharing the radio frequency band (in a way that minimizes the performance impact on the respective radio links), and operating WiFi in U-APSD ( Unscheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery:ネットワーク用の高度な省電力モードのこと ) mode.
