Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a new emerging approach for solving inter-module communicationproblems in VLSI systems. Currently, interconnects dominate the performance and power consumption of high-end chips, while reguiring ever- increasing engineering efforts. NoC systems provides effective sharing of wires, enabling many simultaneous communication links, high bandwidth, power-efficiency, increased engineering productivity and design modularity. Architectural considerations, and implications on future industrial design practices will be presented.

Moore's Law continues to be sustained, as the industry consistently brings to the market powerful CPUs, which have evolved into dual and quad core parts. The entry level dual and quad socket servers turn into powerful machines that double, triple and quadruple the traditional performance. That leaves plenty of CPU headroom for running much more than a single system image on a server. In Addition, grid computing uses distributed systems and therefore requires better I/O between compute nodes as compute nodes become more powerful.

Server consolidation is becoming a hot trend in the datacenter, utilizing the multi core CPU technology. Mainstream CPU vendors' innovations focus on hardware support for CPU and memory virtualization, and lowering the hypervisor overheads. I/O technology still remains the bottleneck of the virtualized servers. The demand for better I/O and fabric consolidation increases as more virtual machines run on a single host machine. I/O devices today are virtualized through sophisticated software intermediary, involving extensive CPU work that includes data copy and context switching.

The InfiniBand technology brings high performance I/O with channel architecture directly to the Virtual Machines. It removes the I/O sharing overheads and fully offloads all networking and storage CPU intensive tasks. CPU resources can then be released for general computation. InfiniBand also provides I/O speeds of 20Gb/s with clear roadmap for doubling and quadrupling those speeds and reducing the application-to-application latencies. Rich set of Quality of Service features combined with independent virtual lanes, truly enable fabric consolidation. High port count non-blocking switching infrastructure combined with hardware implemented congestion management facilitates data center deployment and grid computing.
