Spamdexing - Search fouling : Threat And Defenses

We describe a relatively new, yet critical threat to Internet usage: web search fouling, also known as spamdexing.We also present defenses against this threat.
Web designers are well aware of the importance of being placed high among search engine results.Indeed, high locations are sometimes even paid for. Designers use different tricks and tactics to try to upgrade their site in the search engine results, and search engines work hard to try to prevent such tricks and provide the 'best' results, correctly sorted by order of decreasing importance and relevance. This became almost a game in which site designers and promoters compete, and search engines play the goalie. There were even some public competitions.
However, this game is played for profit, not (just) for fun - with some really foul play. In fact, this has become an area of increasing unethical and illegal operations, such as link spamming - creation of links from different web sites, using automated mechanisms such as fake commenting or visits.
Search fouling is a serious threat. It could be abused to 'phish' unsuspecting web users into web pages containing scams or automatically installing/running malware (e.g. scripts). Also, users can be led to spoofed, fake versions of trustworthy web sites, such as online banking/brokerage servicesor merchants, allowing theft. We will present defenses against search fouling, using techniques from secure web usability, spam prevention, and cryptographic trust management.
